Deep tissue massage is a type of a massage therapy in which the movement of massage is slow and the pressure is deeper in order to focus on realigning the deep layers of muscles and tissue connectivity. Deep tissue massage is not considered like the traditional massage for relaxation but it focuses to cure specific problems. Pressure massage is done on those areas that are in pain, are chronically tensed and are contracted like stiff necks, low back tightness and sore shoulders.
The deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down adhesion which may be tensed chronic muscles, injuries that are painful or have rigid tissues in muscles, tendons and ligaments. Adhesion usually blocks circulation, causing pain, limited movement and inflammation. This massage helps to relieve the pain and restore normal movement.
Deep tissue massage usually involves friction or deep pressure to be applied across the grain of the muscles. During the massage many people feel discomfort or pain. It is essential to tell the therapist when and where it hurts the most and when you experience pain that is intolerable. It is normal to experience pain during deep tissue massage. You can apply ice to the area after the massage, please ask the therapist for guidance. It is also normal to experience pain after the massage which might last up to a day or so but you would surely notice a difference in your motion immediately after the massage.
Deep tissue massage is very beneficial for those who are suffering from chronic pain, limited mobility, recovering from injuries from a fall, whiplash, sports injury, repetitive strain injury such as carpal tunnel syndrome, postural problems, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia and muscle tension or spasm. A consumer reports magazine stated in 2005 that deep tissue massage is more effective than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medication, acupuncture, diet, chiropractic, glusamine etc.
This massage is done using fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows and forearms. The massage therapist would ask you to breathe deeply while she works to relieve your pain. It is also advisable to drink lot of water so that the metabolic waste from the tissue can be flushed out of the body. You should also never eat a heavy meal before the massage. Deep tissue massage is not recommended for people who have infectious skin disease, rash or open wounds or immediately after a surgery. It is basically a therapeutic massage and not meant for you if you are thinking of falling off to sleep during the massage.
